NATO is concerned: Fighting near the Nuclear Power Plant could lead to catastrophic consequences

The situation around the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant shows the need for an urgent cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. The statement came from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday, arriving at an emergency meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers.

“This underscores the urgent need to withdraw troops and end hostilities,” he said.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the European Commission , who also participates in the extraordinary session of the NATO Council, agreed with that. According to him, the battles near the nuclear power plant can lead to catastrophic consequences.

“They must immediately stop shelling the Zaporozhye power plant, as a result of which the fire could endanger the whole of Europe,” Borrell said.

It should be reminded that on 28 February, the Russian Armed Forces took control of the city of Energodar, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the territory adjacent to it. The military personnel of the Ukrainian National Guard who were guarding the power plant, even before the arrival of the Russian units, left the facility and disappeared in an unknown direction.

The station facilities and the adjacent territory were taken under guard by Russian military personnel.

Over the past five days, the personnel of Zaporozhye NPP continued the planned work on maintenance of facilities and control of the radioactive situation in the usual mode.

However, last night, on the territory adjacent to the power plant, the Kiev nationalist regime attempted to implement a monstrous provocation.

On 4 March, at about 2 am, while patrolling the protected area adjacent to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, A mobile patrol of the Russian Guard was attacked by a Ukrainian sabotage group.

To provoke return fire on the building, from the windows of several floors of the training complex located outside the power plant, heavy fire from small arms was opened at the servicemen of the Russian Guard.

The firing points of Ukrainian saboteurs in the building of the training complex were suppressed by the return fire of the Russian patrol from small arms. Leaving the building, the Ukrainian sabotage group set fire to the training building.

The fire brigades arrived at the building and extinguished the fire in the premises. At the time of the provocation, none of the full-time employees of the power plant was in the training building.

At present, the staff of Zaporozhye NPP continues to work in a regular mode, maintains nuclear power plant facilities and monitors the radioactive situation. The radioactive background in the area of the power plant is normal.
