Kristinne Grigoryan was elected the Fifth Ombudsman of the Republic of Armenia

The National Assembly elected Kristinne Grigoryan the Human Rights Defender. Out of 107 deputies, 68 took part in the voting, there were no invalid ballots. 68 deputies voted for her candidacy and 0 against. Opposition factions did not take part in the voting.

The new Human Rights Defender took an oath, “Assuming the post of Human Rights Defender, I swear, being faithful to the Constitution and laws, to the principles of justice, to protect human rights and civil liberties. I swear that I will fulfill my duties impartially, with the utmost honesty and diligence.”

The Defender takes up her duties after the swearing-in ceremony in the National Assembly, the day after the expiration of the previous Defender’s term of office, on 23 February.

Grigoryan was elected Human Rights Defender for a term of 6 years. The deputy’s right to immunity and incompatibility requirements applies to the ombudsman. The National Assembly shall resolve the issue of instituting criminal proceedings against the Human Rights Defender or depriving him/her of liberty by at least three-fifths of the total number of votes of the Deputies.

It should be noted that Grigoryan was appointed Deputy Minister of Justice by the decision of the Prime Minister on 3 July, 2019, and on 6 April, 2021 she was appointed the First Deputy.
