France calls for resumption of political processes between Armenia and Azerbaijan: Jonathan Lacôte

The French Ambassador to Armenia called on Yerevan to resume political processes in Baku. The main concern of the French side is the security of Armenia’s borders.

The Ambassador said this today, on 28 July, at a press conference on the occasion of the completion of Erebuni archeological excavations.

“We realize that all this is taking place in a context that there is a deterioration of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. These are actions that cause concern in France, because in fact this is a violation of the ceasefire, which results in a deterioration of the security situation on the borders of Armenia. In this context, France calls for the resumption of political processes between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but this process must be fair, it must not take place under the influence of another force.

Naturally, within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group, we are in contact with Russia and the United States, so that, first of all, we can make our contribution to calming the situation, and when the time comes, we can resume the political process. However, at the moment our main concern is the border situation in Armenia. Naturally, our focus is on the other points of the 9 November trilateral statement, with which there are still problems, in particular, the issue of the return of all prisoners of war.

Let me clarify that, as I recently stated, France is ready to consider applications for military-political assistance. But given that Armenia and France are not part of the same military-political alliance, our goal is not to prepare for a future war, but to avoid it. We believe that regional issues have no solution by force,” the Ambassador said.

Jonathan Lacôte also added that they are with the soldiers, and the families of the killed soldiers.
