A marriage contract is an agreement between persons planning to marry or an agreement between spouses that determines their property rights and obligations during marriage and/or divorce.
This is the way this contract is specified in the Family Code. In advocate Liana Balyan’s words, even though this provision exists in our country women still avoid signing marriage contracts. “When you inform women that they should sign such a contract before marriage they refuse to do so but afterwards they regret that in case of divorce. This is basically a stereotype formed in society”, said our interlocutor.
According to Liana, the number of divorces continuously increases in our country, and in such cases women find themselves in a stalemate. “Because of not having signed that contract they face problems. For instance, a woman visited me several months ago. She was divorced and had 4 kids. She was crying in the office saying that she didn’t know what to do, she couldn’t get neither an apartment, nor alimony. Her husband had left for Russia, she didn’t know his location, and his parents were not accepting her”, said Mrs. Balyan.
