Meeting of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights finnished

On 20 May, the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights continued its work. Informs the RA NA.

The report on “Human Rights in the North Caucasus: what follow-up to Resolution 1738 (2010)”, which introduced the representative from Ireland Michael McNamara, was considered. Representatives from the RF Kirill Koroteev, Legal Director of Human Rights Centre ‘Memorial’, and Vanessa Kogan, Executive Director of Stichting Russian Justice Initiative, also presented their studies on the issue. The participants discussed a number of problems existing in the sphere, especially, the peculiarity of the legal mechanisms of the protection of human rights, the examination of the missing persons’ cases, cases of violation of women’s and children’s rights, freedom of assemblies and the activity of the police during that period.

The attendees of the meeting also considered the introductory memorandum “Urgent need to prevent human rights violations during peaceful protests” and the information “The fate of critically ill detainees in Europe.”

A number of other issues on the working activities of the Committees were also debated.

Exhausting the agenda the Committee ended the work of the meeting.
