“I Take Much from Nature: I Never Reproduce Nature, but Synthesize It” – Artist Sos Vardazaryan

Painting entered Sos Vardazaryan’s life by chance: during his school years, if the painter is not mistaken, it was the day of Khachatur Abovyan’s centenary, and a painting needed to be enlarged for the occasion. When the teacher asked who could do it, Sos Vardazaryan took on the task and after completing it, heard from the teacher: “My boy, you’re quite a painter.”

“I believed it and started painting,” the artist jokes, adding that perhaps this love had been within him since childhood.

“After military service, I studied at the Terlemezyan Art School and graduated in 1973. After graduation, I worked as a painter in the theater, and in 1974 I was admitted to the Fine Arts Theatre Institute, painting department,” he notes.

Most importantly, one must have great love for painting—if you don’t love your profession, nothing will work out, expresses our hero’s opinion, emphasizing that his ability to reproduce and paint beauty comes from his birthplace—Herher village—with its historical monuments, gorges, river, forest, and bushes: “I have always felt beauty. I take much from nature: I never reproduce nature, but synthesize it. You must be able to find your self, your uniqueness.”

His art is based not only on technique but also on sensation and memory. For Vardazaryan, nature becomes material, but not for copying, rather for processing. The artist’s words are humble, but inside one feels great conviction and wisdom earned throughout life.

The sixteenth part of the “Mystery of Creation” video series, realized within the framework of the “ZArt” cultural project by Iravaban.net, introduces us to the creative world of painter Sos Vardazaryan. His story is a powerful reminder that the mystery of creation often emerges from very simple, earth-bound moments, but reaches high art.

“ZArt” has a special mission: to build a bridge between art and society. The project aims to present Armenian artists and their exceptional works not only to Armenian society but also to the diaspora and abroad, contributing to the popularization of art and recognition of artists. Through this documentary series, society draws closer to art, and artists to society, creating a beautiful space of cultural understanding.

The artist reflects—life is an interesting thing that gives birth to silent art; you must be able to take from life what you need: “The artist sees life with different eyes. I can perceive, see that beauty which I must give, present to people, so that people can also see, rejoice, and say—we hadn’t noticed.”
