“Creating is given from above, we ourselves don’t even think about how it happened”: Artist Alla Ananyan

Artist Alla Ananyan initially wanted to become a musician—a pianist—and says that becoming a painter was a coincidence. That day they were going to the Romanos Melikyan State Music College to submit the necessary documents for admission, and suddenly decided to stop by the Terlemezyan State Art College: “My mother and I were together. Mom said, ‘Come on, let’s go try it, if there’s time, we’ll transfer the documents from here to there.’ She convinced me, but I was far from painting, I could draw, but to this extent?…”

In the first year, she wanted to try her hand at fine arts but couldn’t get admitted, then the following year, the instructors directed her toward design.

Alla Ananyan’s story is very symbolic in terms of how a person’s path can sometimes be shaped by unexpected decisions. In this case, her mother’s advice was pivotal.

The instructors’ guidance toward design is also interesting—sometimes others can see our potential in places where we ourselves aren’t even looking. This story shows that the creative path can begin with coincidence, but continue only with dedication, faith, and true inspiration.

The fourteenth part of the “Mystery of Creation” video series, implemented within the framework of the “ZArt” cultural project by Iravaban.net, allows us to perceive how art lives within a person and how it finds its expression throughout their entire subsequent life.

“ZArt” has a special mission: to build a bridge between art and society. The project aims to introduce Armenian artists and their exceptional works not only to Armenian society but also to the diaspora and abroad, contributing to the popularization of art and recognition of artists. Through this series of videos, society comes closer to art, and artists come closer to society, creating a beautiful space for cultural understanding.

“I was inspired by abstract works, that freedom really appealed to me. I don’t like to be confined, I like to be free both in my way of thinking, speaking, and interacting with people. And if I see that people have barriers to communication, I can’t interact with them—it’s the same in painting.”

For our artist, this is not only a choice of style but an inner response, a form of identity, and perhaps also a protest against limitations—whether they are social, psychological, or artistic.

These words testify that her art comes from her personal values and convictions—and that is precisely what makes art authentic.
