Vera, born in Hadrut, was serving in the defense army of the occupied Artsakh Republic when the war started. A teacher by profession, Vera was was looking for a job and eventually came to the armed forces.

“On 27 September, I received a call that the situation is tense. I left my child and my mother and we went to the positions. People of my age have seen and felt the consequences of war and I had an idea of ​​what war is. My father was killed in the first Artsakh war. We knew the price of the land. As children, we used to make toys out of exploded mines and it was a part of our daily life. Artsakh was a war zone and everyone was in danger, it didn’t matter if you were a soldier or a civilian,” she said.

Vera remembers the first explosion and alarm sounds in Hadrut on 27 September, 2020. “There was no contact, I had no news from my family. I knew that the civilian population was under shelling. I somehow contacted my family, I found out that they were moved to a shelter. Then transportation of the first wounded began, that the most terrible scene in my 30 years of life. I was powerless to help and I realized that every boy is a child of a family and you understand what his parents feel. When the enemy manages to advance, an order was given to remove the female soldiers from the front line. Together with the wounded, we were also removed from our positions. We came to Fizuli, there were worse scenes. We saw the death of young boys,” Vera said, recalling the war.

On 30 September, our interlocutor asked the mother to take her son out of Artsakh, she continued to participate in the battles.

“On 6 October, we heard machine gun sounds, we tried to contact the front line, and they said that those were not ours. We understood that the enemy was already in the city, and was positioned in the city. There was an incident where an officer was with us, he went to ensure the safety of the car, and he was shot and killed. I still do not understand how the women managed to get out,” Vera said.
