Judges whose Powers have been suspended can be reinstated in their Positions according to the Decisions of the ECHR: Siranush Sahakyan

“The purposes of disciplinary tools and vetting applied to judges are different,” lawyer Siranush Sahakyan said in a conversation with Iravaban.net, referring to the statement made earlier by the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Karen Andreasyan.

Let’s remind: the SJC Chairman stated that within the framework of the judicial vetting, large-scale dismissals and appointments of judges took place. “…After the revolution, the powers of 30 judges were terminated on the basis of disciplinary action, 8 of which were terminated within the last year.”

“The fact that the term “vetting” is used in the context of disciplinary responsibility processes already reveals a real intention. It is that those processes contained a political element and turned into processes of getting rid of more listed judges. The main problem here was not to transform the discipline and judicial system, but to get rid of the listed judges, which, in my opinion, is unacceptable,” the lawyer said.

It should be noted that Siranush Sahakyan is the representative at the European Court of Human Rights of 6 of the 8 judges whose powers were suspended during 2023. We also talked with her about the progress of the mentioned cases.
