Today, the National Assembly continued the regular session started on 11 September. The draft laws presented in the first and second reading the previous day were put to the vote and adopted.
Among the adopted drafts was Protocol No. 13 “On the Abolition of the Death Penalty in All Circumstances”. Referring to the draft at the session of 11 September, Chairman of the NA State Legal Committee Vladimir Vardanyan reminded that the 1995 edition of the Constitution of Armenia states that the death penalty and its abolition can be applied exclusively as a punishment for the most serious crimes, further Armenia, becoming a member of the Council of Europe , was in the process of waiving the death penalty.
In 2006, the Republic of Armenia signed Protocol No 13 to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms concerning the abolition of the death penalty in all circumstances, but has not yet ratified it.
