As Georgia is a part of Europe, there are some rules to which Georgia must follow. It especially concerns the basic human rights.
International legal expert of human rights Dr. Fernand de Varennes presents the responsibilities of Georgian government – to ensure the protection of international standards of human rights; in Vahagn Chakhalyan’s case these rights were violated.
The expert has prepared a new and thorough report on ”The Threat of Being National Minority: Human rights and Vahagn Chakhalyan against Georgia”, which will be sent to the European Court of Human Rights and International Court of Human Rights.
”When we speak about fair trial, we mean 7 different issues –a presence and interrogation of a witness. In Chakhalyan’s case there are 4 issues, which were violated’’, reports Dr. Fernand de Varennes.
This case is in the attention of many international legal organizations, since a number of rights were violated. According to the expert, European Court of Human Rights will make a decision in favor of Vahagn Chakhalyan’s case.
On April 7, 2009 Javakheti political activist Vahagn Chakhalyan was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
