Art is the Supreme Interest of the State: Creative Heritage of Sculptor Benik Petrosyan is under Threat

The house that belongs to  the sculptor Benik Petrosyan’s family is located at 38 Hanrapetutyan Str. His widow, Alisa Adamyan, who is a violinist by profession, is now engaged in the preservation of Benik Petrosyan’s creative heritage.

According to her, they bought the area in 2002, they work as a family, they organize exhibitions there. The main objective is to have the Benik Petrosyans Museum.

“My family consists of creative members. My children are outstanding creators; they should have their own creative spaces. However, in 2003, this area appeared in the sale zone and became a supreme interest of the state. We haven’t had the opportunity to implement our plans in 20 years,” Alisa Adamyan said.

The family now carries out the preservation of the works with their own funds, which is quite a difficult job, because the paintings are made of different materials and require special maintenance and care.

Benik Petrosyan’s family members want the works of the Armenian sculptor to be placed in the museum beawhich has his name, but “art is the supreme interest of the state”.

The Alisa Adamyan’s sons are pianist, jazz musician, leader of avant-garde jazz-rock group “Cats”, participant of “Armenian Navy Band” group Vahagn Hayrapetyan, and sculptor Areg Petrosyan, her daughter is artist-designer Arev Petrosyan.
