Today, oncology services in Armenia are in a state of neglect։ Khachatur Badalyan

Every year in February, the National Institute of Health and the Association of Armenian Oncologists organize a conference dedicated to the World Cancer Day. This year it was held in Sochi, which was incomprehensible for Professor Khachatur Badalyan, Head of the Chair of Surgical Diseases and Modern Surgical Technologies of the National Institute of Health; Surgeon, Oncologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of “Izmirlian” Medical Center.

According to the doctor, no quality oncology services in Armenia, and the conference was supposed to be a stimulus to talk about problems.

“There is no logical explanation why it was held in Sochi. From the financial point of view, if the conference was held in one of our regions, we would have somehow helped the local entrepreneurs. I expressed a desire to participate in the event. The priority issues related to the topic had to be discussed. The topic of discussion at the conference was mainly the breast glands, some topics were gynecology and laparoscopic surgery,” Dr. Khachatur Badalyan says.

According to the doctor, laparoscopic surgery is considered a breakthrough in the field of surgery and often replaces traditional surgery. It provides higher accuracy and better results in the case of various surgical interventions. At the same time, laparoscopic surgery requires the surgeon to be more skilled and more experienced in working with the medical equipment used to perform such surgeries.

According to him, he presented topics that are directly related to oncology, but they were not accepted, due to which the doctor did not participate in it.

“Can I ask a direct question; by what criteria do they determine the interest of the topics? By what criteria do they decide how the program is compiled? How is it decided which problem is more interesting and important for the development of oncology services in Armenia?” The doctor asks and adds that he participated in last year’s conference, and the topics were the same.

According to him, today the oncology services in Armenia are in a state of neglect.

“In my opinion, the issue of control by the ministry is important. If we are talking about the development of service at the state level, then the approach must become systematic and meet international standards. I urge to take a more consistent approach,” the professor says.

According to him, the pathologies of the liver and pancreas are quite severe, and there is no modern approach in Armenia for both prevention and detection of oncology at the initial stage and other steps.
