On Tuesday morning, after the end of the seven-day term, Alen Simonyan signed the resignation letter of President Armen Sarkissian, which he submitted on 23 January.
It should be noted that the duties of the President of the country will be temporarily transferred to the NA President Alen Simonyan, and he will be replaced by the NA Vice President Hakob Arshakyan, as he received the most votes when he was elected to his post.
The name of the opposition presidential candidate is not known yet, a version is circulating that the opposition will not nominate a candidate.
Notably, on Sunday the online version of “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper belonging to the family of the RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan informed that the ruling “Civil Contract” Party has decided to nominate Vahagn Khachaturyan, Minister of High Tech Industry, former Mayor of Yerevan. He was appointed Minister of HTI in August 2021. He is an economist by education.
According to the constitution, until the election of a new President, before the newly-elected President of the Republic assumes the office, the powers of the President of the Republic shall be exercised by the Chairperson of the National Assembly. New elections shall be held not earlier than twenty-five and not later than thirty-five days after the day of accepting the resignation of the President of the Republic. As Armenia is a country with a parliamentary system of government, the president is elected by parliament for a term of seven years.
