The elections of the Chairman of the Chamber of Advocates will be held on 12 September. The candidates registered in connection with the election are Gevorg Gyozalyan and Simon Babayan. Tamara Poghosyan has submitted a self-withdrawal application. A debate was organized today, on 8 September.
Presenting his program, Simon Babayan said that his motto is “To Preserve and develop”. According to him, the achievements of the Chamber of Advocates should be preserved.
Lawyer Gevorg Parunakyan asked a question to the candidate Simon Babayan, noting that their community is replenished with about 140 new lawyers a year, there is a problem of employment, what solution does Simon Babayan offer?
“We have no problem in this respect, there are standards. We do not have a problem with limiting the number of lawyers; we do not have the right to do that, because this is a free profession. “We can complicate the educational and professional requirements,” Simon Babayan said.
Gevorg Gyozalyan, the other candidate for the position to the Chairman of the Chamber of Advocates asked him a question, “You consider the idea of having several Chambers of Advocates divisive. I have been inclined to that since time immemorial, if, for example, 200 lawyers decide to set up their own chamber, to advance their professional activity at the expense of their membership fees, will you consider them divisive? ”
Simon Babayan mentioned that the actions aimed at splitting the law institute are not fair, they are not right.
“We have a problem here from the point of view of international perception. Our partners perceive our community as a united structure,” he said.
Gevorg Gyozalyan referred to Simon Babayan’s political activity, reminding him that he had signed a statement demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister.
“You said that the Prime Minister’s team failed in the field of education and gave the lands, etc. Do you think so at the moment? If so, how are you going to cooperate with them?” he said.
According to Simon Babayan, it is the result of his private activity.
“The negotiation process is in the institutional sphere, I do not think we have a problem here. I do not think that the government is constrained by that circumstance. I voiced it as a lawyer Simon Babayan. In my opinion, it is not necessary to connect it with my professional activity,” Simon Babayan said.
Responding to the answer, Georg Gyozalyan said ․ “Will you make such statements as the Chairman of the Chamber of Advocates?”
Simon Babayan said that everyone in Armenia has the right to express his position on the current situation.
“In the future, if there are opportunities, we will understand whether there is a need for such statements or not,” he added.
