The Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly is discussing a draft law submitted by the Ministry of Justice on making amendments and supplements to the Judicial Code as well as to the Law on the Constitutional Court and related laws.
There is also a provision in the draft which reads: “Regardless of age, the Constitutional Court judge who has resigned in the period from 1 August to 31 October, 2019, shall have the salary, allowances and social security guaranteed until his /her resignation, until he/she reaches the age of tenure, except for the case of passing to public service. A judge of the Constitutional Court shall receive a pension prescribed by law after reaching the age of tenure.”
The authors of the draft noted that the current Constitutional Court does not enjoy the confidence of the people.
Gevorg Petrosyan says his faction is against the project and it is wasting taxpayers’ money; “They don’t have money to keep a working judge, and is there money for a non-working judge? If those people are useless, look for reasons to hold them accountable, take to the court.”
He does not agree that there is a crisis in the CC: “The name of the only crisis in the CC is Vahe Grigoryan, who does not work and gets money. If you’re not attending a meeting, why do you get a salary and incentives? “
