“The Impression is Positive:” Piotr Świtalski on Anti-Corruption Packages

Head of the EU Delegation Ambassador Piotr Świtalski

“The EU supports Armenia in various ways, in particular with financial support, in the fight against corruption.” The Head of the EU Delegation in Armenia Ambassador Piotr Świtalski said this during the meeting with the journalists today. “We cannot lose hope for optimism, even if the Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center’s assessments are not encouraging, I have come here to express our preliminary assessment on the legislative package which was adopted by the National Assembly. In particular, I mean the creation of an Anti-Corruption Commission, the Whistleblowers’ Institute and expanding the circle of authorities who will submit declarations,” he said.

The Ambassador also mentioned that it is anticipated to carry out a professional assessment by the experts, which is mandatory within the framework of financial arrangements. “There are problems that we can have here or there. In general, the impression is positive, favorable, this is a very important step. The government yesterday announced about the new anti-corruption strategy, which is also welcomed,” emphasized Mr. Świtalski.

Notably, in the beginning of June the national Assembly adopted in the second reading the legislative package on the Corruption Prevention Commission, the Whistleblowers’’ System and Related Legal Acts.” These drafts were elaborated with participation of the Armenian Lawyers’ Association, CSOs’ Anti-Corruption Coalition of Armenia, and with financial support of the EU.
