Today, the draft of the Ministry of Justice was approved at the regular session of the government.
The decision was stipulated by the imperative to meet the obligation undertaken by the Republic of Armenia before the Council of Europe to unconditionally fulfill the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.
The executive decided that according to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights on the case of ’’Simonyan vs. Armenia» (number 18275/08) made on 7 July, 2016, the Republic of Armenia is obliged to pay the sum of equivalent to 18,255 (eighteen thousand two hundred and fifty-five) Euros in Armenian currency as fair compensation defined by the verdict, within the period of three months after the decision enters into force.
Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan approved the draft, but expressed concerns. First, he instructed the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice to clarify how much money was the paid to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the past years, and then the Prime Minister asked, “Should anyone in general be responsible for those wrong decisions or not?”
