Ani Hovhannisyan, founder of Analitik.am news website sent a letter from the Abovyan penitentiary, of the RA Ministry of Justice, referring to the violence against journalists that took place after the occupation of SPS regiment. Liparit Simonyan, advocate of Hovhannisyan, provided Iravaban.net with it. The letter is below:
On July 29, of the current year, I strongly condemn violence against journalists carried out by the police in Sari Tagh and taking into account the fact that such an approach has already become a way of practice, I challenge everyone, especially the media representatives to show unity and will about this issue in order to put an end to various illegal repression and violence against us.
Dear colleagues and compatriots, being under preliminary arrest, because of the illegal persecution against me, although late, but, only in this way I have the opportunity to join your initiative, fully sharing the concerns that suppressing media sector not only separate Mass Media Means and journalists are injured, but also as a result democracy foundations, as well as public security are strongly violated.
Taking into account the above mentioned, the media sector must be independent in the RA, and the state must guarantee that independence. There can be no free and independent state without freedom of speech.
