How to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict, according to NATO?

Alexander Vershbow, the current Deputy Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has met with Davit Tonoyan, the First Deputy Defense Minister of the Republic of Armenia. Alexander Vershbow wrote in his Twitter account, “Good to meet Armenian First Deputy Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan. There can be no military solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict.”

He has also noted, “Nagorno Karabakh conflict urgently requires de-escalation and diplomatic progress under the auspices of OSCE Minsk Group co-chair.”

The RA Ministry of Defense reports that on 21 April, Davit Tonoyan, the First Deputy Defense Minister of the Republic of Armenia, who is on a working visit to NATO headquarters, met with Alexander Vershbow, the Deputy Secretary-General of NATO.

During the meeting, the First Deputy Defense Minister presented the details of the aggression of Azerbaijan against Nagorno Karabakh in early April, in particular the planned attacks and the evidences proving the violations of the norms of international humanitarian law committed by the Azerbaijani side. David Tonoyan said that Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to self-determination cannot be suppressed with military force. “It is re-confirmed that the Armenians worldwide is mobilized and would protect that right by all measures. The people of Nagorno Karabakh have the right to self-defense and to improve the environment of its security.”

The parties discussed the issues of cooperation between Armenia and NATO as well. Ambassador Vershbow, appreciated the current level of Armenia-NATO relations and expressed hope that it would continue to maintain the development dynamics.

On 22 April, Davit Tonoyan will participate in the discussion of Armenia-NATO “Planning and Review process” document.
