On February 19, Hovhannes Sahakyan convened the regular meeting of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.
The agenda of the meeting included three issues. Arpine Hovhannisyan, the RA Minister of Justice presented the first Draft. She supported the changes provided by the Draft Law on Changes and Amendments in the Penitentiary Code of the Republic of Armenia, which recommended providing the right to additional visits to the persons sentenced for a certain period or sentenced to life imprisonment for particularly grave crimes. According to the Minister this would assist to raising the efficiency of work with such prisoners and to strengthen their ties with their families and the outside world. In addition this will promote development of law abiding behavior of prisoners.
Hovhannes Sahakyan rated the report positively and noted that adoption of the Draft will also ensure compliance to the requirements of a number of international instruments.
The members of the Standing Committee rated the report positively and the Draft Law on Changes and Amendments in the Penitentiary Code of the Republic of Armenia will be included in the draft agenda of the NA Spring Session and the upcoming four-day sittings.
