Hovik Abrahamyan sees Corruption Risks in the Draft of Ministry of Science and Education

Today, at the Government Session, Karine Harutyunyan, the Deputy Minister of Science and Education, introduced a draft, which suggested allowing “Yerevan High School # 119 after B.Zhamkochyan” SNCO admission of pupils to grades from 5 to 9 in 2016 – 2017 academic year, with the purpose to organize intensive French language courses and open at least two classes.

“Yerevan High School # 119 after B.Zhamkochyan” SNCO is located on 64 Tigran Mets Street and has capacity of 650 pupils. The number of pupils in 7th, 8th and 9th classes is 180. The number of pupils in 10th, 11th, and 12th classes is 80. The number of pupils that study French language is 260. The school has an adjacent building for organizing intensive French language courses and carrying out additional francophone programs. According to the draft the school has experience, tradition, academic potential for teaching French, and which assisted to preservation of teaching French at school throughout the years.

The Deputy Minister said that every year on class of middle school is closed in this school, and these results in decrease of the number of pupils. In future, it will be impossible to organize intensive French language courses in Yerevan High School # 119 without the middle school pupils.

In addition the introduced draft showed that the school had been authorized to organize at least two classes for organization of intensive French language courses.

“Why do you limit? Don’t you see corruption risks in these?” Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan asked. The Deputy Minister only said that they had based on the statistics, “The direct funding is for a limited number,” she said.
