Interview with Mariam Zadoyan, advocate of the Armenian Young Lawyers Association
In your opinion what was the most important legal event in 2015?
The protests in Baghramyan Avenue, as it was the first time that we had no political movement, in which I highlight the idea that the main part of the protesters were young people. I also stress the importance of the pre-election campaign of the “No” before the Constitutional referendum.
Is there any positive progress in the RA justice?
Partially, yes, due to the fact that nowadays people are more informed about their rights so they realize their rights; therefore they are becoming more demanding.
Has the corruption increased or decreased in the legal field in 2015?
In my opinion, it decreased a bit.
Are you satisfied with the work of executive and legislative bodies?
From executive, no: Some bodies of the Government even do not answer the calls, they are not working effectively, do not properly respond to inquiries. The same situation is in the Legislative body: There are only a few Deputies who are really implementing law-making activities.
What do you expect from 2016?
Many expectations, first I would like to see stronger civil society, which is able to protect its rights in the scope of the lawfully organized demonstrations. I have a lot of expectations concerning me. This year I received the license of advocate. I intend to start a serious advocate activity in 2016.
Which is the most scandalous court case in this year?
This year there have probably been many discussed cases, but it’s hard to point one of them as the most scandalous.
What ridiculous and funny events do you remember from your internship?
There are many cases, for example, when citizens come and ask to initiate a criminal case, and then we should explain, that we do not have the right to do that.
How are you celebrating the New Year?
I celebrate the New Year with my family. I have the habit of eating a grape seed at each second when it is becomes 12 am. If I am not mistaken, the Spanish people welcome the New Year in this way.
What interesting memory will you tell me from the New Year?
Last year there were competitions during the New Year celebration and special wines were given to the winners. I won two of three competitions: intellectual and dancing. The third competition was only for boys, so I was not able take part in it.
