The regular anti-corruption event for the CSOs, Media. Lawyers and human rights activists of Gegharkunik marz “Corruption Risks in the Area of Education” took place in the AYLA Gegharkunik marz Branch Office on 20 November.
Mrs. Nelli Harutyunyan, Regional Coordinator/Expert of the project greeted the participants and refereed to the problems that exist in the marz in this sphere. In particular, money collection in schools, and universities, the disproportionality of the tuition fees as compared with the family budget, in accessibility of the transportation fees allocated for the teachers, etc. providing teachers with access transport costs etc.
Anush Shahinyan, President of “Tskhani Tsukh” NGO, member of Gegharkunik marz CSOs’ Coalition Group, attached importance to the public control in the sphere. She noted that the public surveillance should be conducted in the committees that are organized for the teachers and headmasters of the schools on three year basis, and which include real corruption risks.
The motivation for education should be changed among the students of the higher educational establishments. Students should realize academic examinations are for acquisition of knowledge, and should not be passed in alternative or different ways.
Siranush Manukyan, President of “Barekamutyun” Women’s Council of National Minorities, spoke about the corruption risks in the area of distribution of the textbooks.
As a result of discussions the participants made different recommendations.
According to them it is necessary to carry out monitoring in the schools, among the pupils and the teachers, related with the issue of money collection, as well as to review the size of fees for the tuition of the students.
At the end the participants expressed their gratitude for organization of such event.
