EuroNews reports that during last month the pressure on Ponta increased. In October 2015 he was forced to surrender his position as the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) because of being involved in tax fraud. The position was taken over by Liviu Dragnea. So, he became the first acting prime minister of the country to face trial for corruption.
Last Friday, on 30 October, the fire at a nightclub in the capital that killed 32 people became the last drop that made the cup run over. More than 20.000 people went to the streets of Bucharest demanding the Government’s resignation. Dragnea announced that he would resign in the nearest future.
“Victor Ponta is giving up his mandate. Somebody needs to take responsibility for what happened. This is a serious matter and we promise to find a quick solution to this situation. You have probably noticed thousands of people in the evening and you are aware of their demand,” he said in the Parliament, during his conversation with reporters.
The protesters have accused the government of corruption as well as of not taking enough security measures due to which people died, as there was only one fire exit in the night club.
130 people were injured, dozens of them remain in severe and critical condition.
