“Proper stimulating policy must be implemented”: MoJ on protecting the rights of national minorities

The main issue regarding national minorities in Armenia is related to developing stimulating policy, as the state seeks to be responsive for protection purposes. Anahit Manasyan, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, said this in an interview with Iravaban.net.

“For example, I think the issue related to teaching national minority languages in educational institutions is a major problem, which leads to issues with preserving national minority languages. At this moment in Armenia, we don’t have corresponding departments in universities that teach national minority languages or train specialists,” she noted.

According to Minister of Justice Anahit Manasyan, respect for diversity is lacking in the Republic of Armenia, and it should be formed through stimulating measures, one of which is educational textbooks, particularly conveying proper understanding about national minorities, their traditions, and culture in school textbooks.

“There are applications that are submitted to us also by representatives of national minorities, and part of the applications relate to, for example, various discriminatory approaches, cases of apparent discrimination, while another part may not be specifically emphasized on the national minority circumstance, but as an additional circumstance, applicants periodically emphasize this,” said the Minister of Justice, stressing that the mechanisms currently being applied have been changed, and significant work is being done from the perspective of effective work organization.
