Theft of 15,500 USD under the Pretext Admission to the Law Faculty: Investigative Committee

Preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated on swindling money by cheating a citizen under the pretext of giving a bribe to several officials to have her son entered  the faculty of Law of Yerevan State University was completed in General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of RA Investigative Committee. In the framework of the criminal case charge was pressed against 4 persons.

Through the prepared materials it was particularly found that getting informed of the citizen’s wish to have her son entered the faculty of Law of Yerevan State University in May and June, 2014 the persons having committed the apparent crime received from the citizen about 15.500 USD under the pretext of giving a bribe to several officials and swindled the money by cheating her.

Through investigation sufficient data were obtained on the allegation that the lecturer of Department of Physics of another educational institution being informed of the wish to have her son entered the faculty of Law of Yerevan State University and willingness to give a bribe, promised to help her.

The lecturer informed one of his acquaintances about it. The latter, reaching a prior agreement with another citizen, assured that they could help the woman with her son’s admission and demanded money to bribe the officials in charge.

According to investigation data the woman gave 15.500 USD to the mediator-lecturer who took 2.000 USD as a fee and handed the rest of money – 13.000 USD to the persons who had promised to organize the boy’s admission.

After the entrance exams had finished the woman realized that she had been cheated and demanded her money back, but it was delayed for different reasons and by false promises.

On the base of the evidence obtained during pretrial proceeding the two persons were charged according to the Point 1 of the Part 3 of the Article 178 of RA Criminal Code, the woman was charged according to the Point 1 of the Part 3 of the Article 34-312, and the lecturer was charged according to the Part 1 of the Article 34-313 of RA Criminal Code.

The criminal case with the bill of indictment was sent to the prosecutor supervising the legality of preliminary investigation.

Note; Everyone charged with alleged crime offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.
