Prosecutor committed Fraud Attempt using his Official Position

Maher M., a citizen of the Russian Federation and an Arabian by nationality, being interrogated as a witness to the criminal case reviewed in the Investigation Committee of the Republic of Armenia reported that in 2011 he had given 2500 USD to the police officer for the purpose of obtaining a Passport of the Republic of Armenia for his wife, but later realizing that he could not obtain a passport requested his money back.

In addition, in 2002 he turned to the same police officer with a request of aiding him to resolve the matter in his favour regarding the complaint concerning him submitted to the police department by his friend. To resolve the above matter, the policeman requested 12 thousand USD, but he refused to give the money.

In 2014 the above police officer was appointed a prosecutor.

A criminal case was launched as per on materials prepared on basis of the report of a citizen of the Russian Federation Maher M. under the crimes stipulated by Paragraphs 1.1 and 2 of Article 178 and Paragraph 1 of Part 3 of Articles 34-178 and stamped by the General Prosecutor of the Republic of Armenia. The said criminal case was sent to the Special Investigation Service of the Republic of Armenia which has instituted a legal proceeding against it.

A preliminary investigation is underway.

Note: The suspect or the accused of the alleged offence is deemed innocent unless his or her innocence is proved by virtue of the effective court verdict in the manner prescribed by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia.
