Within the framework of Iravaban.net‘s series of interviews “The Church and the Law,” we spoke with Father Arnak Harutyunyan, the spiritual pastor of Yerevan’s Saint Gregory the Illuminator Mother Church, on the topic “Trials in Faith.”
According to him, fluctuations of faith are always present in humans, even if we momentarily step away from Christianity.
“Man always has fluctuations of faith regarding his life, regarding the work he does, and this is natural because man is not perfect. And since he is not perfect, he must have this doubt, this lack of faith. The same applies to Christian life. That is, what exists today—these fluctuations of faith or the weakening of faith—this is not new,” notes our interlocutor.
Father Arnak says that Jesus Christ also spoke about this topic, and it has always existed.
“Lack of faith comes from unfamiliarity. When man comes to know God, he understands that God is sweet. But when he doesn’t know Him, there is fear within him—whether he should establish contact with God. Lord Jesus Christ says: when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth? Therefore, the Lord Himself knew that a time would come when man’s faith would weaken. Today is that time—the time of that weakness. Man today has begun to believe in technology,” says the clergyman.
“God will not allow a trial in man’s life broader than his shoulders. That is, God allows us to be tested, but only as much as we need—as much as we can handle. God allows this so that man may become stronger. Trials come to make us stronger, if we are ready to walk that path with God. Therefore, man must understand that every his moment is a trial, and if he wants his trial to serve the improvement of his person, he must be with God,” says Father Arnak.
