On September 13, 2022, Azerbaijan launched aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, targeting several areas in Syunik, Jermuk, and Gegharkunik.

Gurgen Zakaryan was drafted into the army, keeping in mind the self-sacrificing heroes of 2020 who fought until the end at the cost of their lives and kept Artsakh Armenian.

To his mother’s urges and pleas to avoid the army, Gurgen had replied: “Mom, in 2020 we slept peacefully at the cost of the boys’ lives, now it’s our turn. Now I must pay my debt to the homeland.”

“Walking Calculator” – this was the nickname given to Gurgen, who was very good at calculations and dreamed of creating UAVs.

Tall, blue-eyed, fair-skinned, blonde Gurgen was supposed to serve in a Russian military unit, but he refused the “easy service.” He served 6 months in Lusakert, then was drafted to Syunik province with the rank of junior sergeant.

“At night my husband called: war has started. On September 13, I was crying while talking to Gurgen, he said, ‘Mom, our position is so good, we are safe, don’t be afraid.’ He called again in the evening, he was very calm. He called again on the morning of September 14. He spoke quickly with me and his father. At that time his voice didn’t sound right. He said, ‘Dad, don’t feel bad, I destroyed a ‘domik’ (position), dad, don’t be sad, everything will be fine.’ And his last word was ‘Mom!’ which he stretched out and then hung up. That was our last conversation,” – recalled his mother, Hasmik Madoyan.

Gurgen Zakaryan was killed on September 14, 2022, in the area of “Kachal Mountain.”
