The memorial service of three-time Olympic champion, world and European champion Albert Azaryan will be held at the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan on 8 September, from 17:00.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports reported.
The last farewell will take place on 9 September, at 11:00-13:00 at St. Hovhannes Karapet Church in Kond, at 13:00-13:30 at Albert Azaryan Children and Youth Gymnastics School (address: Moskovyan 3).
Albert Azaryan’s will be buried in the Komitas pantheon. Funeral at 2:00 p.m.
Albert Azaryan was born on 11 February, 1929 in Gandzak, in the family of a craftsman. In 1939, the family moved to Vanadzor, and in 1947 to Yerevan. He is an Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1954), an Honored Coach of the USSR, an Honored Figure of Physical Culture and Sports of the USSR (1967).
He participated in competitions in 49 countries of the world, won 45 gold, 42 silver and 10 bronze medals. He is a three-time Olympic, four-time world and two-time European champion. He was awarded the title of champion 11 times in the championships of the USSR.
According to the certification of the International Gymnastics Federation, the complex of exercises performed by him on the rings was officially named “Azaryan Cross”.
Albert Azaryan is the Honorary President of the Gymnastics Federation of Armenia. He passed away on 5 September, 2023 at the age of 94.
It should be noted that by the decision of the RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, a funeral government commission was established under the chairmanship of the RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture Zhanna Andreasyan in connection with the death of the famous Armenian gymnast, distinguished figure of physical culture and sports, three-time Olympic champion, world and European champion, “King of Rings” Albert Azaryan.
Deputy Minister Karen Giloyan is also included in the Commission.
