According to the decision of the Supreme Judicial Council, the powers of 6 judges were terminated

As a result of the legislative changes proposed by the Supreme Judicial Council, 6 judges whose powers were suspended ceased to serve as of today.

They are: Ara Kubanyan, Gevorg Narinyan, Boris Bakhshiyan, Albert Petrosyan, Davit Grigoryan and Arusyak Aleksanyan.

According to the above-mentioned legislative amendment, it will be possible to make new appointments instead of judges with suspended powers for more than 1 month, which will contribute to reducing the overloading of courts.

Let’s add that before the changes, the positions of suspended judges were not considered vacant and there were no mechanisms to replace them, which led to even crisis situations in the conditions of overloaded courts.

For example, the powers of Judge Aghvan Petrosyan of the General Jurisdiction Court of Gegharkunik Marz have been suspended for about 6 years, and the lack of conditions for appointing another judge in his place during protracted court proceedings has led to a number of problems, including difficulties in ensuring the normal work of this court.

The legislative solutions brought to life will make it possible to avoid similar situations.

Let us add that the above-mentioned legislative amendments were discussed and worked out yet in December 2022, during the outreach workshops organized in Dilijan by the initiative of the SJC, with the participation of more than 250 judges, representatives of the legislative and executive authorities operating in the Republic of Armenia.
