On December 15, in New York, the Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan had a meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo.
During the meeting, Minister Mirzoyan presented the recent developments on the normalization process of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations and the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The Foreign Minister of Armenia noted that Azerbaijan’s maximalist approaches, the aggressions against the territorial integrity of Armenia, the ongoing occupation of the sovereign territories of the Republic of Armenia and warmongering and armenophobic statements create an unstable situation in the region – full of security and humanitarian challenges. Minister Mirzoyan also highlighted the need of repatriation of the Armenian prisoners of war and the inadmissibility of political manipulation of the issue by Azerbaijan.
The Armenian side presented the situation resulting from the blockage of the Lachin Corridor and the disruption of gas supply to Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan, emphasizing the threat of a humanitarian crisis. The importance of an adequate and targeted response by international structures, in particular, the relevant UN bodies, as well as the implementation of effective steps in order to exclude a possible humanitarian catastrophe was underscored.
