Vahagn Khachaturyan was elected President of the Republic of Armenia in the second round. 71 deputies of the National Assembly took part in the voting, 71 deputies voted for and 0 against. There were no invalid ballots.

Iravaban.net reports that the candidate having received at least three fourths of votes of the total number of Deputies shall be elected as President of the Republic. In case President of the Republic is not elected, a second round of elections shall be held wherein all candidates having taken part in the first round may participate. Khachaturyan was not elected in the first round.

In the second round, the candidate having received at least three fifths of votes of the total number of Deputies shall be elected as President of the Republic. In case President of the Republic is not elected, a third round of elections shall be held wherein the two candidates having received a greater number of votes in the second round may participate. In the third round, the candidate having received the majority of votes of the total number of Deputies shall be elected as President of the Republic.

The President of the Republic elected through extraordinary elections shall assume office on the tenth day after having been elected, which takes place at a special sitting of the National Assembly.

Vahagn Khachaturyan was born in 1959 in Sisian.

He graduated from the Yerevan Institute of National Economy in 1980, with the qualification of economist.

1982 to 1989, he worked in “HrazdanMash” (Hrazdan Instrumental Production) Enterprise.

1989 to 1992 he was the deputy general director of “Mars” Factory.

1990 to 1996 he was a member of the Yerevan City Council,

1992 to 1996 he served as the Mayor of Yerevan.

1995 to 1999 he was a deputy in the National Assembly of Armenia

1996 to 1998 he was an adviser to President of Armenia

2000 – Founding member of the ARMAT Center for Democracy and Civil Society Development

In 2002- Vice President of the Center for Political Science, Law, and Economic Research.

2006 – Founding member of the social and political initiatives “Aylyntrank”

2019- 2021 – Member of the Board of the Armeconombank
