Two citizens of the Republic of Armenia have been charged with high treason.

According to the accusatory conclusion, Garun B., having reached a preliminary agreement with Gagik H., to the detriment of the territorial integrity and external security of the Republic of Armenia, committed high treason in 2018․ They sided with the enemy, spied on, handed over a state secret to the representatives of a foreign state, and provided other assistance for carrying out hostile activities.

Garun B. performed similar actions during 2020as well.

Detention was applied to them as a measure of restraint.

Both have been charged under Article 299, Part 1 of the Criminal Code.

It should be noted that according to the article, High treason, i.e. siding with the enemy, espionage, transfer of state secrets to a foreign state or foreign organization, or assisting in the implementation of hostile action committed by a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, against the self-government, territorial inviolability or external security of the Republic of Armenia, is punished with imprisonment for the term of 10 to 15 years, with or without property confiscation.

The court case was signed on 10 December, 2021 to Judge Adrine Ghukasyan of the Court of General Jurisdiction of Armavir Region.

A court hearing has not been scheduled yet.

Note: A person that is suspected or accused of an alleged crime is considered innocent until his/her guilt is proved by a court judgment that has come into legal effect pursuant to the procedure determined by RA Criminal Procedure Code.
