The official opening of the Apostolic Nunciature to Armenia will take place on 27 October

On 27 October, 2021 at 12:00 (noon), will take place the official opening of the Apostolic Nunciature to Armenia (“Vatican Embassy”).

For many of the world’s countries the longest standing diplomatic relationship is with the Papacy – itself the oldest diplomatic entity in the world.  Throughout the centuries, the very long and rich relationship between Armenia and the Holy See has continued to be strengthened.

An official delegation from the Vatican will be present headed by His Excellency Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Pope Francis’s Substitute for General Affairs at the Secretariat of State in the Vatican.

The ceremony will take place in the open at street level at 10/1 North Avenue (corner with Pushkin St.) with the hoisting of the Holy See flag and the presence of a few dignitaries, given the world health pandemic of Covid-19.

His Excellency Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra will be on an official visit to Armenia, from 27 to 28 October, 2021, during which he will meet with the Armenian Authorities to discuss questions concerning bilateral relations as well as national and regional concerns.

During his two-day visit,Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra also visit with His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

The Holy See was among the first States and international bodies to recognize Armenian sovereignty in 1992 and to name an Apostolic Nuncio to Armenia. Since then the Apostolic Nuncio to Armenia was resident in Tbilisi.

In 2021 – 2022 the Holy See and Armenia celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations (1992), 20 years of the of visit of Pope St. John Paul II (1991), and five years of the visit of Pope Francis to Armenia (2016).
