As a result of a number of reforms implemented by the Ministry of Justice in 2020, success has been registered in the penitentiary system of Armenia as well.

In particular:

• Thanks to the work of the “Prison Medical Center” SNCO, a positive shift has been registered in the field of prison healthcare. Compared to the last 9 years, in 2020 the number of deaths in penitentiaries has visibly decreased. The lowest mortality rate since 2011 was recorded in 2020 – 5 (0.25%) of the 2003 detainees, of which 2 died in civilian hospitals and 3 in penitentiaries.
• The building conditions of penitentiaries have been improved. The work was carried out in all 12 penitentiaries.
• The issue of food, which has been considered one of the most sensitive problems for years, has been solved. The food security function has been delegated to the private sector, as a result of which a new food security system is currently operating in all penitentiaries.
• The salaries of penitentiaries have been increased by about 30%. As a result, it became possible to significantly reduce the vacancies in the system.
• Consistent measures have also been taken in the field of combating criminal subculture. Databases have been developed for each of the representatives of the criminal subculture and an action plan has been developed.
