The Council of Elders of Yerevan decided to award the title of “Honorary Citizen of Yerevan” to Aghvan Chatinyan, the Armenian mountaineer, Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, Honorary Member of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia, Professor of the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, USSR “Honorary Mountain Rescuer” for the over 60 years of his significant contribution to the development of mountaineering and fruitful activities aimed at the development of Armenian sports.
It is mentioned in the justification that 20 November marks the 94th anniversary of Aghvan Chatinyan.
The last ascent was made in 2001, climbing the northern peak of Aragats, during which a cross was erected on the top of the mountain on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of Christianity.
Aghvan Chatinyan has published about 100 works, participated as a stuntman in a number of feature films, including “I know him personally”, “Ghosts leave the mountains”, “Flight over the abyss”, “Mourning snow”, “Vertical” replacing famous actors. Vladimir Vysotsky, Gurgen Tonunts and others.
Ascents: Oshba-Shkhelda traverse, Ushba cross, Magra (4th degree complexity), Dongus (4th degree complexity), Elbrus, Ulu-Tau Chana (via Abalakov’s way, Central Caucasus), Dambay-Ugen traverse, Amanaus with southern wall, Mashogh Mammadov (Central Asia), Pioneer (Pamir), Tagar, Peak Pervoye Maya (Caucasus), Peak Aviation (Central Caucasus), Kirpich and other mountains.
