“Armenia is considering the possibility of recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh’s independence, but it will not change much internationally. Recognition of other countries in terms of conflict settlement will change the situation,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in an interview with Italian newspaper La Republica.
“The situation is different with Armenia. Of course, we are discussing that possibility, but Armenia’s recognition will not change much in terms of international relations, because we have de facto recognized Nagorno-Karabakh and have established relations. International recognition is just what can change the situation in terms of settling the issue. This is why I think that in this situation the most effective diplomatic way to stop this terrorist attack is to recognize the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,” the Prime Minister said.
Pashinyan stressed that Nagorno Karabakh has always said it is ready to compromise, but Azerbaijan has never wanted to negotiate.
“The last time was in 2014, when Baku refused to sign a peace agreement, as it would mean recognizing the right of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh to self-determination. Baku wants to return to the status quo that was before the liberation war of 1991. ” Prime Minister Pashinyan said.
On 9 October, the Alforville City Council of France unanimously recognized the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. The Artsakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that the international recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh is the only way to establish lasting peace in the region.
It should be reminded that in the early morning of 27 September, Azerbaijan launched an air and missile attack in the direction of Artsakh, targeting both military facilities and civilian infrastructure, including in Stepanakert. Martial law has been declared in Armenia and Artsakh.
