Today, on 22 June, the National Assembly convened an extraordinary sitting. There is one issue on the agenda: amendments to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

The draft envisages amending Article 213 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia of 5 July 1995, with the amendments of 2005, as follows:

“Article 213. Holding Office on the Part of the Members and Chairperson of the Constitutional Court:

1. The term of office of a member of the Constitutional Court (judge) appointed before the entry into force of Chapter 7 of the Constitution and appointed to the position of a member of the Constitutional Court or a judge who has been in office for a term not less than 12 years shall be considered over and the tenure shall cease.
2. A member of the Constitutional Court appointed before the entry into force of Chapter 7 of the Constitution, whose term of office does not cease by virtue of part 1 of this Article, shall continue to serve as a judge of the Constitutional Court until the end of his 12 years in office, also taking into account the term of office of a member of the Constitutional Court before the entry into force of Chapter 7 of the Constitution.
3. After the entry into force of Chapter 7 of the Constitution, the nominations for the vacancies of judges of the Constitutional Court shall be made by the Government, the President of the Republic and the General Meeting of Judges consequently. Nominations for the vacancies of a judge of the Constitutional Court, based on part 1 of this article, shall be made within one month after the vacancy arises.
4. The term of office of the President of the Constitutional Court ceases. After the vacancy of the position of the President of the Constitutional Court, the President of the Constitutional Court shall be elected in accordance with Article 166 of the Constitution, which shall be implemented after filling the vacancies of the judges of the Constitutional Court arising on the basis of part 1 of this article.”
