Ghost City: the Streets of Naples are empty, it takes 1.5 Hours to enter the Store: Mary Amiraghyan

It is already the third day that Mary Amiraghyan, who lives in Naples, Campania, Italy, and family members are not leaving home. In the interview with Iravaban.net, Mary spoke about the city life and the situation in the country in these days.

“We can go out of the house in 3 cases – to the store, to the pharmacy, and to go to work, when there is a need. The state encourages, urges them to stay home,” Mary says, adding that the streets of the city are empty.

According to Mary, it takes a lot of preparation to go to the supermarket. “I went to the supermarket yesterday because there were some things I needed to buy. I waited about 1.5 hours to enter the store. It doesn’t matter the size of the supermarket, they let 5 people in, and the waiters in the queue keep one meter away. My husband later came to help me but was not allowed to come in. They told me to come out and then he would come to help. It was very severe. All the shops are sterilizing, the tables where we take bread, sausage, they don’t allow us to come in, we will stop, they say, hurry up, do your shopping quickly and go out, they keep cleaning,” Mary Amiraghyan says.

According to her, though she went to the store for some products, but seeing the situation, decided to do more shopping because she was not physically or psychologically ready to go again, waiting for more than an hour, thinking every moment that she may be approached by someone who could be, infected, etc.

“Pasta, flour, sugar, salt. oil, long-lasting dairy products, the main staples – peas, lentils, peas, sweets, sterilizers, and more were over at the supermarket. When I wanted to buy it, there were no such onthe shelves, but they were getting alongside it and there is no shortage of goods, there is no such serious problem,” she said.

The state has also provided citizens with a form to fill it in indiacteing what they are doing when they leave the house and stand by them to show them to police officers when the latter would stop them.

In addition, Naples authorities have decided that all departments in one of the local hospitals should be moved and accommodated only for people with coronavirus.

“The streets of Naples are always full of cars, cars, signals, noise. Yesterday, the streets were empty and it was fearful, as if it were a ghost city,” Mary says.

She also notes that in parallel with the ban on leaving home, the Italian authorities have taken a decision to deprive citizens of the opportunity to work; “Concessions should be made for people who pay their home loan every month, for example. For example, my husband is a sole entrepreneur and he now suffers because he does not work, but has to pay taxes. Now there are rumors that the state should make concessions in such cases as well. ”

It is also sad for Italian citizens that churches prohibit liturgies, weddings, baptisms, and so on.

“The posting hash-tag #iorestoacasa means I’m staying home. The government’s decision was not heard by many people, leaving home, then celebrities, bloggers, and other figures posting pictures with this account: at home, in nightwear. It also helped and people were not leaving the house and now the streets are empty,” Mary says.

Notably, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on 9 March  ordered citizens to stay home and avoid travel. And the budget airline Ryanair has suspended all flights from Yerevan to Italy until 8 April.
