There will be no Price Changes; there is no need to Panic; Chairman of the SCPEC

Gegham Gevorgyan, Chairman of the State Commission for Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC), today, on March 2, during a press conference, touched upon the panic situation in the society related to the first case of Corunavirus.

“Yesterday we saw that the citizens were shopping in some stores in a panic. There is no need for it at all. For example, the amount of sugar is so big that it will be enough for one year. We also have a large amount of locally produced and a large amount of sugar in the warehouses, the same is true of flour. I think purchases of this kind are inappropriate and I urge citizens not to take such actions because we do not have any worrisome situation at present,” Gegham Gevorgyan said.

The SCPEC President notes that they cannot control the situation in all small shops in Armenia, but assured that there will be no price changes related to the situation in all major stores.

Gegham Gevorgyan also touched upon the issue of restriction of goods imported from Iran.

“We are collaborating with our SRC and Ministry of Economy partners and have a list of Iranian-based products to assess what impact they may have on the market. There is no imported product from Iran that could cause a deficit or a hindrance in the market, even in the case of diesel its volume is not enough to cause us problems.”

He called on the relevant authorities and the media not to speak of deficits or artificial deficits without credible sources.
