During the process of the elections of the RA Ombudsman in the NA, some delegates raised the issue of the lawfulness of the arrest of civil activist Vardges Gaspari.
Meanwhile, today on 24 February, Vardges Gaspari’s advocate alerted to the RA Ombudsman’s stuff that Vardges Gaspari was subjected to cruelty in the RA Ministry of Justice “Nubarashen” penitentiary. In addition, Vardges Gaspari’s wife and lawyer also informed that she has not been allowed to visit her husband. Based on this information the RA Ombudsman’s stuff representatives visited V. Gaspari. Vardges Gaspari announced that he went on strike as he was maltreated in the cell and underwent violence as well. He also declared that he was transferred to another cell. After the meeting with the representatives of the Human Rights Defender he stopped the hunger strike. Based on the above mentioned the Human Rights Defender initiated the procedure of discussing the issue and applied to the RA Prosecutor General with recommendation to launch a proceeding in the order provided under the Civil Procedure Code of the RA.
The Ombudsman has applied to the RA Minister of Justice with the request for clarification on the same issue. As well as to clarify the reasons why the officials of “Nubarashen” Penitentiary did not allow Gaspari’s wife and the lawyer to meet with him.
The Ombudsman also turned to the RA Minister of Justice with request to support in regulation of other issue referring to this case.
