Today, the Social-Democratic Party “Citizen’s Decision” was officially established. 106 delegates attended the founding congress of the party. The first issue on the agenda was the establishment of the party. The vote was unanimous.
The delegates unanimously voted for the adoption of the statute and the program of the Party.
Later, the delegates elected the Party secretary, members of the Executive Body and the Supervisory Committee.
Suren Sahakyan was elected Secretary of the Party. He spoke with us and told why they founded this party. “According to the Constitution, creating a party, becoming a member of the party is the only way to participate in the political life.”
In response to our question whether they were going to participate in the elections to the National Assembly, he said that after this meeting the second step would be to register the party, after which there will be a discussions with the party members on this issue. “In my opinion, in case of registration of the party, we will definitely participate in the parliamentary elections,” he said.
Mikael Nahapetyan, a delegate of the party and the member of the executive body, presented the party’s program, where the importance of the human rights protection and judiciary and legal reforms was highlighted, including achieving these reforms through transitional justice as well.
“Judges have been actively involved in systematic illegalities should leave the judicial system through the mechanism of vetting,” he said.
The anti-corruption fight was also highlighted in the program of the newly-formed party. “It is crucial to have a centralized anti-corruption apparatus in the fight against corruption, which will implement anti-corruption strategies,” Michael Nahapetyan said.
Nerses Aghababyan, a delegate of the party and member of Supervisory Committee noted that although by virtue of law the party has a secretary, yet all the members enjoy the same right to vote and are gathered around one idea rather than around one person.
