On 16 January, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan and the H.E. Ambassador Traian Hristea, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia held a ceremony on the launch of eight EU – Armenia Financing Agreements, intended to assist development and reforms in Armenia. The Ceremony took place in the Prime Minister’s Office of the Republic of Armenia. The new actions entail an EU contribution of € 77.5 million (44 billion AMD), informs the Press Service of the RA Government.
Hovik Abrahamyan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, and H.E. Ambassador Traian Hristea, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia held welcome speeches.
Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan in his speech mentioned, “We want to maintain the dynamics that we acquired as a result of relations with the European Union. It is crucial for the further development of our country’s political institutions and government agencies to improve and create favorable conditions for economic development.”
H.E. Ambassador Traian Hristea, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia in his speech mentioned, “The European Union expects that this substantial assistance will lead to bold reforms over the next years. A high level of commitment and strong domestic support under parliamentary and civil society oversight will be indispensable for Armenia’s successful development.”
Eight agreements are intended to promote the progress of bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture to regional development, to support the migration and border management, civil service and anti-corruption reforms, improving water supply, and reconstruction of Yerevan underground and the nuclear security.
In the area of governance, the EU is now focusing specifically on anti-corruption and civil service reform measures (€ 21 million).
This new assistance package confirms the commitment of Armenia and the EU to further strengthen their bilateral cooperation.
