International Child Abduction by one of the Parents: What Issues does The Hague Convention address?

The Convention on the Civil Aspects International Child Abduction was adopted in 1980 in The Hague. It is known as the Hague Convention. States Parties to this Convention shall undertake to protect the rights of the child, and if children have been displaced or are kept in their territories, they shall take measures to return the child to the State from which the child was transferred.

This convention has been in force in Armenia since 2007.

It is important not to confuse a person’s abduction in a criminal sense with the international abduction of a child.

An example is the case when the mother tells the child’s father that they are leaving the country for a few days, but it turns out that she is abducting the child.

Lawyer Ashkhen Dashyan provided details on the topic.
