What is Gender, what Stereotypes and Problems Women Face? Lawyer Nvard Piliposyan
The major part of women’s problems in the family are conditioned by gender stereotypes. Lawyer Nvard Piliposyan said this during a roundtable discussion on the “Prospects of Strengthening the Mechanisms for the Protection of Women’s Rights in Armenia” which took place on 12July.
According to her, gender is a social phenomenon of sex. “When we speak about gender stereotypes, these are stereotypes conditioned by perceptions of the gender rather than by the sex. For example, if we talk that a woman can have a baby, that is her sex-derived function, and if we talk about the fact that a woman should be meek, modest, or wear certain clothing, this is a social idea that has nothing to do with physiological peculiarities,” the lawyer said.
