I fell down in the yard and screamed, ‘My Marlen has gone!’ The contract soldier was going to get married
Marlen Ayvazyan, who died in the 44-day Artsakh war, had entered contract service in the armed forces after being demobilized from the army.
“He was a smart boy. He dreamed of living well, living a good life and having everything. When my Marlen returned from the army, he opened a bakery in our village. I was baking bread and my son was working as a courier. He took the bread to people’s houses, put it on the table and did not take the money. Then he would come and say, ‘Mom, give me money, I have lost mine’. Then I found out that he was ashamed to take that 200 drams,” his mother, Elmira Ayvazyan says.
The father, Artush Ayvazyan, says that the war started about 10 days after his son entered the contract service.
“The last call was on 11 October, he said, ‘I’m fine, be well, and stay well.’ There were many people who left in fear, but he was not afraid,” the father says.
Friends say that he was happy to go to the battlefield. They tell that Marlen picked pomegranates for the boys.
Marlen Ayvazyan was posthumously awarded the Medal for Combat Service.
