The Judge Indicted for Taking $20,000 Bribe Was Sentenced to Imprisonment

The judicial bribery case which received much publicity in December 2014 has been solved.

Charges had been pressed against Khachatur Khachatryan, the former Judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction of the RA Lori Region, who, when holding this position from 27 February, 2009, demanded from Seyran Karapetyan and personally received from him a bribe of particularly large amount, that is 9,186,000 AMD (equivalent to 20,000 US dollars), in his office in the Court of General Jurisdiction of the RA Lori Region on 25 December, 2014, at about 6:30 PM.  The bribe was requested by Khachatryan for performing certain actions within the scope of his competence in Karapetyan’s favor, as well as for facilitating certain actions in Karapetyan’s favor through abuse of official position.

Lusine Abgaryan, Judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction of the RA Lori Region

Today, the verdict was made in the Court of General Jurisdiction of the RA Lori Region chaired by Judge of the Court Lusine Abgaryan. The former judge was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment. The Court found him guilty of the incriminated action.

Khachatur Khachatryan’s advocate, attorney Karen Tumanyan, during his conversation with us characterized the verdict as an unfair judicial act. He said that the prosecutor filed a motion for imprisonment of 9.5 years. The court has not addressed the question of property confiscation.

Let us recall that the Press Center of the National Security published a video, which was shot before and during the arrest of Judge of the Court of General Jurisdiction of the RA Lori Region Khachatur Khachatryan.

The video is available here.
