Why didn’t Aram Orbelyan participate in Jessup Competition?

Today the information on 2014-2015 Jessup Competition was introduced to the Gyumri students.

Advocate Miss Syuzanna Soghomonyan, Armenian National Administrator of Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition informed the students that this year the competition would be held in English language. She said that through participation in the competition the students would improve their knowledge in the sphere of international law.

During the meeting with the students, Aram Orbelyan, who had served thrice as a judge in Moscow rounds of the Jessup Competition mentioned that he had always wished to participate in this competition, however he failed to fulfill his wish. Every time he intended to participate in the competition he was invited to participate as a judge. Mr. Orbelyan, also explained why it was decided to held the national rounds in English. “When discussing I always insisted that the competition should be held in English. Unfortunately Armenia has not been successful in the international moot courts. Our teams appear in embarrassing situation because of the bad knowledge of English. This is a good opportunity to conceive the application model of the international law, to speak English, to understand which aspects shall be paid more attention in future. Un addition, participation in this competition provides opportunity to further develop the professional skills,” Mr. Orbelyan mentioned. He added that participation in such competitions was necessary for the career development of the students as well.

The topic of this years competition refers to the issues of secession and annexation and the legal regulation of the right national self-determination. The teams shall register on-line by 14 November 2014.

The Competition is held in two rounds: national and international. The Armenian rounds of Jessup Competition are held on the initiative and support of the Armenian Young Lawyers Association NGO, The Law Foundation of Armenia and “Legal Alliance” Law Firm in cooperation with the Jessup Club of Armenia.

The winner of the Armenian National round will participate in the international round to be held in April 2015 in Washington DC, the US. Students of the law faculties from the law scools and universities of the RA may apply for participation in Armenian National Rounds. The teams shall consist from 2-5 students (one team from each university or law school). The application shall include copies of passports of the team members and coaches; copies of the students’ cards of the team members; certificate stating that the team members are students of that university/law school, and indicate the year of study; contacts of the team members and the coach (address, phone number and e-mail).
